I’ve always been drawn to the water, just call me Moana.  As a kid, I lived in the pool during the summer. Spring was spent playing in this eternal puddle on the corner of our street searching for tadpoles. As an adult, I still love to be in and near water and always find my greatest sense of peace there. Paddleboarding is our new favorite family activity!

So when a friend asked me to photograph her maternity session in the river a few years ago, I was beyond excited, energized and inspired! The location we found has become a new favorite spot and I absolutely adore photographing families there for a few reasons!

1. Everyone loves playing in the water. Inviting you to play brings out your natural joy and true smiles. I make games and activities at all of my sessions to keep kids having fun and looking natural but being at the water allows for a little more candid experience. Dads are always game for rock skipping contests! I know as adults we can feel anxious in front of the camera but having something to do helps us loosen up and forget about the camera a little!

2. There’s a great variety at my river locations! We usually start out with tree-lined fields and move down to the river to play. Or vice versa, it’s always flexible depending on the kids’ moods in order to make the experience as stress-free as possible!

3. The way the light plays with the water and the textures of the river rock is just unbeatable! The trees help filter the sun which means you have more time with great light! That fact alone makes the river perfect for mini sessions!!
