Do you hear it? I hear it too. That little voice telling me all of the reasons I don’t need to book our family for photos. “The kids haven’t really grown or changed that much since our session last summer. And I need to lose weight. And our schedule is so busy when will we fit it in?”

But then I actually look at the last photos we had taken and see that my kids really did grow a lot over the last months. The “baby” is 5 now and starting to grow longer and leaner and losing all of that baby chub. The middle is getting taller and taller every day and towers over his sister by a couple of inches now. Our little girl is headed into 4th grade and changes are here and more are definitely just around the corner. I don’t want to miss this. Even if I feel less than my best, my kids don’t see that. They see our family pictures on the wall, smiling and happy together and they feel loved and important and that right there stops that little voice dead in its tracks.

Some photographers absolutely hate mini sessions but I truly love them! Most kids are totally happy for a 20-minute session. They don’t have time to get bored with me and my antics. 20 minutes is usually enough time to get 50 unique images for me as I shoot fast and keep things going. Mini sessions also allow me to see 3x as many families in the same amount of time as a full session. I get to keep up with all of my favorite regular clients, plus meet new families, and still get to make it to soccer practice and girl scouts. OF COURSE, there is a place for full sessions! And I definitely recommend making them a priority every couple of years. But minis are a perfect time-out with your family to SNUGGLE and PLAY in a busy season, and the perfect way to beat time at its own game.
