Here’s what Julianne had to say about birth, babies and her Fort Collins doula business:
Why did you become a doula?
I have always been a person who loves to nurture and support people, especially women and mothers. The birth and postpartum space has been a place where I always felt like my awkward self fits in. And it’s funny because even when I was a young teenager, I was brought into the birth space. It was like the universe was telling me I was supposed to be a doula, even back then. It just took me 20 years working careers that just paid the bills before I realized it. I raised my daughter by myself as a very young mom and often lacked the support of a village. I love so much to assist families in ways so they don’t have to feel alone on their parenting journey. You can read more about my doula story in my blog at www.juliannecurtis.com/blog
What areas do you serve?
I serve Northern Colorado and Cheyenne Wyoming. Most often I attend both home and hospital births. The hospitals I frequent most are Poudre Valley Hospital and Banner Hospital in Fort Collins, Medical Center of the Rockies and Mckee hospitals in Loveland. Other cities I attend births quite often are in Longmont, Boulder and Lafayette. I will also attend births in Greeley, Cheyenne Regional and as far North Denver.
How many births have you attended? Is there a special story of a birth you’d like to share?
I have attended over 50 births now. I’m sworn to secrecy when it comes to sharing the birth stories of my clients. But there is one special one I can talk about. I might be a little biased but attending the birth of my grandson almost two years ago was by far my most memorable birth. I I was in full doula mode until he was born. Once I knew mom and baby were in good shape I turned off being their doula and was able to be full on Grandma. I was in love. I do remember every birth I attend and find even the unhappy births where there is a loss to be special.
Are you certified? What’s your education?
I am a certified birth and bereavement doula trained to provide doula services during any trimester of pregnancy with any birth outcome. I am currently servicing as the Vice-President and Community Outreach Head Chair for the Northern Colorado Doula Association (NCDA). In 2018 I will be taking over as President of the NCDA. I have received the following certifications and continuing education: Certified Birth and Bereavement Doula 2016 – Stillbirthday Trained Birth Doula 2015 – Dona International Trained Postpartum Doula 2016 – Dona International Certified Expert Robozo Credential 2017 – GK University Trained Life Coach – 2005 – Fearless Living Institute I am currently working on my CLC (Certified Lactation Counselor) Certification and Childbirth Education Certification.
Do you have a backup doula? How did you choose them?
Northern Colorado has an amazing number of doulas working in the community. I work with backups depending on my clients personality and needs. I choose backups based on their professionalism and doula work matching as close as possible to my own.
How many clients do you take a month?
I am a full time doula. I’m lucky that it’s my passion and my career. I take on average four births per month. I will take up to six postpartum clients a month depending on each families needs for support. Each month I will also work with families who have had or in the process of pregnancy loss.
How would you describe your doula “style”?
I would consider my style to be custom tailored for each client I work with. I provide non-judgmental support to each family, no matter the type of birth they desire. I strongly believe this is their birth and they should be able to look back in twenty years and be proud of the decisions they got to make for themselves, no matter how much their birth plans change along the way. I do my best to always provide families with all the evidenced based education and then empower them to decide what options are best for them. I really try to promote a sense of community and support with my clients that continues long after their babies are born. And with all of that my clients know they will get lots of comedic humor from me (at the right times) and nurturing support the rest of the time. I’m like the mama (they have always wanted) without the drama.
Do you offer any additional services?
I am also a postpartum doula, adoption doula and bereavement doula. As a bereavement doula I work by donation only. I co-facilitate two grief groups in partnership with 3Hopeful Hearts; A miscarriage support group which meets the 1st Thursday of every month. And the other group, Pregnancy and Parenting After Loss, this group meets the 1st Wednesday of every month. You can find out more about these groups at 3hopefulhearts.com I also provide Bengkung Belly Binding to postpartum moms. It’s amazing.
