It’s been a little while (read: years!) since I’ve introduced myself on the blog so I thought it was time for a refresher! I’m Kate, newborn and family photographer based out of my Loveland, CO studio and connecting with families throughout northern Colorado. I serve parents who know that time is fleeting and that their children will only be little for a little while. My sessions serve as a timeout from “busy”; a moment to reconnect with your family for a fun and playful hour of just you and your love for each other. As a mom, this is what lights me up. Those candid in between moments snuggling your babies and feeling the wonder of parenting.

As my kids get older I see so many changes in them every day. And then other times some big change surprises me that I didn’t even notice happening. They’re 8, 5, and 4 years old right now and I’m loving the stages they’re in. Of course, I miss some of those baby things too though. And the photographs and videos I’ve taken over the year fill some little part of my mama soul and help me to remember all those little things. I’m so honored to create those memories for other families.

One of the best things about being a photographer is being able to fit my business around our family life. Time with my kids is my number one priority! As a family, we love to camp (especially near water!), visit parks, and snuggle up for a movie night. When the kids are otherwise occupied, I love creating, whether it’s working in my bullet journal, playing with watercolor and lettering or Pinterest planning our next home project (look out kitchen cabinets, I’m coming for you!). I’m always curious and constantly trying to learn something new or grow in some way. Podcasts, audiobooks, or amazon prime music are always filling my ears or maybe some trashy tv haha! I also love talking to people and learning their stories. I love how different we all are from each other but that there is always some way to relate to one another. Give me an iced coffee and good conversation any day!

As a photographer, getting to know my clients and share their stories through pictures is magical! I’d love to get to know you and your family! Let’s chat! Comment below and share a favorite podcast or audiobook you’ve listened to lately! I’m always looking for something new! A growing family {Blair, Loveland Newborn Pictures}

A growing family {Blair, Loveland Newborn Pictures}

I met the S family back in the summer of 2016 when they were celebrating making it through the first year of their first kiddos life! G was just starting to walk and holding his little arms in the air for balance as he toddled along the wooden bridge backed by the foothills just outside of Fort Collins. Fast forward a year and a half and now G is the big brother and I got to see him for his baby sister’s newborn pictures!

Going from only child to big brother is such a big transition not just for G but for the whole family! I distinctly remember Harper’s last day as an only child. I was scheduled for induction with my second baby so we knew it was the last day. We spent the day visiting the farm and having “coffee” together. We went to dinner as a family of 3. As a mom, I worried about how I’d handle two kids. Would I be able to give both of them the love and attention they needed/deserved? Of course, every mom I knew reassured me that the love just grows and they were right. Not just the love for the new baby but somehow you fall more in love with your 1st child and your spouse watching them grow into their new roles.

It was such an honor to watch the S family as they are growing into their new roles with baby Blair’s arrival. She is the sweetest little babe and slept like a dream for her newborn pictures. We started with the family images so that G could go hang with daddy and still got his nap! He was such a proud big brother, holding this tiny bundled up baby girl with a big grin on his face!

Milestone Session {Lincoln is 6 months!}

Milestone Session {Lincoln is 6 months!}

For real, this sitter stage is one of my very favorites! I miss the days when I could put my little baby on a blanket with some toys and they’d sit and explore with their hands and put every little thing in their mouth. Before mobility got them excited about bigger and better things and moving all over the house.  These milestone sessions are always some of the sweetest as you catch all of those little sides of their personality before they can run away. Not too long after this session, Lincoln was crawling all over and then suddenly walking!

6 month sitter session milestone studio photography loveland coloradoThis was Lincoln’s second session in the studio with me! Of course, I get to watch him grow anyway as he’s my nephew but it’s a special thing to have him in front of my camera.

I love styling these sessions to be classic and timeless. When your little one is a brother, baby #2 can have a matching session and still be in style!  The studio has a good selection of wardrobe options for boys and girls in muted and neutral colors. Including special props like Lincoln’s favorite little elephant lovey make these pictures even more special.

If the little person in your life is about to reach a new milestone, you know it will be short-lived before the stage breezes in and takes you by surprise! Contact me at kate@dearkatestudios.com to schedule your studio session today <3

FORT COLLINS DOULA FEATURED INTERVIEW: Sacred Vessel Acupuncture & Doula

FORT COLLINS DOULA FEATURED INTERVIEW: Sacred Vessel Acupuncture & Doula

Sarah Thompson
Sacred Vessel Acupuncture & Doula

Website: www.sacredvesselacupuncture.com
Email: info@sacredvesselacupuncture.com
Phone Number: (970) 631-8119

I had the pleasure of seeing Sarah with my second pregnancy for accupuncture. It was near the end of my pregnancy and even with a fear of needles, Sarah helped put me at ease! She has a very calming presence and the accupture procedure also helped me let go of some of my fear surrounding labor and delivery. Here’s a little more about Sarah in her own words:

Why did you become a doula?
Oh, it is such a long story… I have been an Acupuncturist for over 12 years. I started my practice in Pain Management and Sports Medicine. About 3 years into my practice, I found out I was pregnant. It was an entirely different world, and I was completely blown away by the modern view of birth. I believe very strongly in health and the body’s natural abilities. I began my search for practitioners that would be able to provide the services I needed at the time. Being an Acupuncturist first and foremost, I was looking for an Acupuncturist that would be able to provide full pregnancy/birth/postpartum support. There wasn’t anyone! I knew right then that I needed to fill that void. After the birth of my first child, I began pursuing the avenue of becoming a Doula so that I could provide not only prenatal care but also bring my Acupuncture/Herbal and Nutritional services to birth as well.

What areas do you serve?
I work the northern front range and up into southern Wyoming…including Cheyenne, Laramie, Greeley, Loveland and Fort Collins. I work in most hospitals including Cheyenne Regional, PVH, MCR, and the Banner System. I also love homebirths.

How many births have you attended? Is there a special story of a birth you’d like to share?
I honestly haven’t kept track! But it is somewhere over 75 at this point. I have so many amazing birth stories! One of my favorites I actually missed! This was a repeat Doula client. I was called in as a backup doula with her first pregnancy. It was a very long and trying homebirth that lasted several days (started on a Friday and went into the following Monday). I was asked to join in on Sunday to provide back up doula services as well as Acupuncture to help speed things along. When I arrived she was laboring HARD and was progressing very slowly. After an Acupuncture session, she had progressed to near complete…and began some mild pushing. She, unfortunately, developed some cervical swelling and made the decision to transfer to the hospital for an epidural. With her second pregnancy, we began working nutrition and acupuncture early on (at the beginning of pregnancy). She also hired me to be her doula for her second birth. We assumed that her second birth would be long, but our goal would be to make it a normally long birth (more like 12-24 hours, not 4 days). I met with her in the office on a Friday well before her due date. She showed very little sign of being close to labor. I touched base and went to a family holiday party. I got a call from her husband later that evening saying things had really changed and they were headed to the hospital. I gathered my stuff and started to head that way. I called as I entered the parking lot, and the husband told me that I had missed it…baby was already there. To my great surprise, she had a very quick, natural, and healthy birth. It makes me so happy to see that big change from her first to second with proper prenatal care.

Are you certified? What’s your education?
I am not certified as a Doula, for my own personal reasons. I have an extensive education that is accredited, as well as state and nationally board certified. For me, certification did not make sense. The Doula profession is not regulated by a standardized board, and thus all certifications are different and do not encompass the same parameters. For me, it did not make my training better. My Current Education: Bachelor’s Degree Nutrition and Health Sciences Master’s Degree Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine State Licensed Acupuncturist Board Certified Acupuncturist-Herbalist-Nutritionist ToLabor Trained Doula Certification in Functional Medicine to be completed 2018

Do you have a backup doula? How did you choose them?
I have several Doulas that I work with. I am a unique niche in the doula field, and it is very hard to find a back up that can offer all the same services that I provide. I do, however, have an Acupuncturist-Doula that I use as my primary back up. The women I choose as backup are those that I personally know and trust.

How many clients do you take a month?
I have taken up to 5 clients a month in the past, but have found that for me to provide the best care to my client and not have it interfere too much with my Acupuncture practice, that the maximum clients that I can take per month is 2. I do, however, take many more prenatal and nutrition clients.

How would you describe your doula “style”?
I like to explain to potential clients that this is their experiences, not mine. My goal is to give them the experience that they are hoping for and to educate and guide them through it. I use to joke that I don’t have a photo of me being a doula because it isn’t my experience. I am often in the background, giving advice, guidance, and encouragement to the couple. helping them to achieve this goal together. That being said, I do not have any problems jumping in and getting hands on, but in the end, the goal is to build the relationship with the couple, not me and the mother. I am a very strong personality, and that isn’t for everyone. I love educating and throwing lots of information at people, sometimes it can be a bit overwhelming. In labor, I an compassionate, but also direct and fact driven. I will explain risks, and let the couple make the decision that is best for them…whatever it is, I support it.

Do you offer any additional services?
Absolutely! I do Nutritional Counseling for a variety of health conditions, including: Fertility, Menstrual Health, Chronic Inflammation, Diabetes, etc… As well as prenatal and postpartum Nutrition Acupuncture for Women’s Health, Pain Management and Sports Medicine Herbology Cupping Moxibustion Treatments for Breech Presentation Acupuncture for Labor Augmentation

What to wear for Fall Family Photos in Northern Colorado 2017

What to wear for Fall Family Photos in Northern Colorado 2017

It’s that time of year again! The leaves are starting to change and we are getting a taste of those cooler temperatures! Pumpkin spice everything is everywhere and boots are starting to break out of their closets! Here are some idea of what to wear for your fall family pictures this year in northern Colorado!

Fall 2017 Family pictures Northern Colorado

I pretty much always start putting together wardrobes based on either mom or daughter’s outfit! There are just so many adorable prints available for women and girls that it’s easy to build a color palette from one outfit. In this first example, the plaid dress popped up in my instagram feel and I was in love! Then the red dress came through a facebook ad from Target and the rest fell into place! These colors will pop against the yellows, oranges and greens of fall in Colorado!

Fall 2017 Family Pictures Loveland CO

This second look, I pulled together with the Pantone colors for fall 2017 in mind. I love the olives and mustards and that pop of bright red-orange!

I’m always happy to help style wardrobe for my clients! You can start with something you already have or shop brand new for every family member! Either way I’d love to help you pull together outfits that are comfortable, flattering and look great in pictures!
